A "Moor" was a historical term used by Europeans for diverse North African Muslim peoples (Arabs, Berbers) who ruled parts of Spain (al-Andalus) from the 8th to 15th centuries, later broadening to refer generally to dark-skinned Muslims, including Black Africans, and today denoting the Arab-Berber ethnic group in Mauritania. The term lacks precise ethnological meaning and was used loosely by Europeans, often linking it to dark skin or Islam, as seen in Shakespeare's Othello.

Whether you consider yourself an African American, Foundational Black American, or purely African, this is a home for you. In the eyes of our English white counterparts, a Moor was generalized to be someone of melanated skin. Those qualities are welcomed with open arms into a sense of belonging here. Regardless who your DNA places you with, a Moor within our walls belongs to a culture, not a bloodline.

Moors were a diverse community of successful melanated individuals that built a self-sustaining society. They ran that society successfully for well over seven centuries. We look to utilize that blueprint & improve upon it, as our ancestors would have intended.
